The systems challenge

While youth employment initiatives like the Youth Guarantee Trailblazers include mental health support within a broader approach, a gap remains for specialised evidence-based interventions that support young people with mental health conditions who are at risk of disengaging from education or employment.

Our aim

To identify, test and promote specific, evidence-based interventions through assessing Individual Placement and Support for Youth (IPS-Y) as an effective youth employment intervention for young people receiving CAMHS treatment.

What are we doing?

We are exploring the impact IPS-Y has on education, employment and training (EET) outcomes of young people aged 16 to 18 with mental health conditions.

Individual Placement Support is a recognised employment intervention for people with mental health conditions. It delivers intensive assistance to secure rapid job placement followed by ongoing workplace support to maintain employment sustainability.

Programme overview

We want to:

  • know more about the potential impact of IPS specifically for young people, building on emerging international evidence
  • understand if and how IPS-Y could be translated to a UK context

How?

A large scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) of IPS-Y has not yet been conducted in the UK.

This is why we are conducting a feasibility study to see whether IPS-Y is ready to be evaluated.

The feasibility study will determine whether it is viable, acceptable and practical to run a pilot RCT for 16- to 18-year-olds in Greater Manchester who are supported by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
