Bringing together the latest data and evidence on the youth employment landscape to inform effective action

We believe that evidence is essential to building our understanding of the complex challenges we face.

Our 2024 report draws on analysis of official statistics and new international data, alongside voter perspectives, and young people’s reflections on the labour market to present a full picture of the existing barriers and opportunities for young people transitioning into meaningful work.

It reveals that the 1 in 8 young people across the UK are not in education, employment or training (‘NEET’), with poor mental health having the biggest impact on employment prospects.

Responding to these findings, the report offers recommendations for action to move us towards better solutions, including improving access to apprenticeships.

Ready to be the change?

Proposed by the Youth Employment Group, a national coalition of experts, the Young Person’s Guarantee is a commitment that all young people under 25 will receive support to access employment, training, or education within four months of leaving employment or formal education.

As the What Works Centre for youth employment, we have developed free, digital tools that bring together the latest global evidence to support evidence-informed decision making.

The problem is stubborn, persistent and complex, requiring collaborative work across Government, civil society, and the business community. Addressing it will not only improve the UK’s competitiveness and prosperity, it will also help thousands more young people find the pathway in life that is right for them.”

The UK’s high NEET levels are a persistent and important challenge that we simply cannot ignore.
