Case Study

Cumbria Youth Alliance

by | Feb 20, 2021

Katie referred herself to the First Steps to Employment project in November 2019. She had been out of work for a long period; this had impacted her mental health and she was lacking in self-confidence. Katie had an idea that she would like to develop a career in youth work, but had no previous experience or qualifications. To overcome this, Katie agreed to attend Cumbria Youth Alliance’s Coalfields sessions in December 2019, where she gained mental health first aid, emotional resilience, and emergency first aid qualifications. She also took on a peer support and mentoring role to help other young people engage with and complete the program. To further develop her learning and experience, Katie started volunteering as a peer supporter for Together We in Workington.

During lockdown, Katie took the lead in hosting a weekly online chat session through CYA for young people, to help them overcome loneliness and provide an opportunity to discuss topical subjects or things that were affecting them. Katie demonstrated real drive and determination to overcome her barriers and achieve her goal. She has come such a long way and has now secured a position with a local Youth provider, helping to design implement and deliver a new Gaming Addiction project.
